Quinn's woes may be costly for long-suffering motorists Belfast Telegraph

The administration of Quinn Insurance causes difficulties for many motorists because it has been both one of the largest and one of the cheapest car insurers in the Northern Ireland market.

Just how many motorists here are affected is unclear, as Quinn declined to state how many policies it has in Northern Ireland.

Soon after Quinn was placed into provisional administration, the insurer stopped writing new policies and stated it would not renew policies in Northern Ireland or elsewhere in the UK.

Whether that situation remains permanent is unclear. But it has been reported that much of its business in Northern Ireland is unprofitable, so even if it resumes operations here premiums may go up.

The possible loss of Quinn Direct from the market makes a bad situation worse for car owners here: the Consumer Council is concerned at the number of insurers who operate elsewhere in the UK, but not in Northern Ireland. It also worries that too many drivers renew policies without comparising premium costs.
