Starting this year children with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied insurance.There are 14,500 adults with “pre-existing conditions”, like cancer, heart disease or diabetes, who will not be denied insurance in 2014. Until then they can join a “high risk pool.”
There are 47,000 young people under 26 who can now be covered by their parent’s insurance.
There will be major new funding for 12 community health centers in the district.
In 2008 there were 700 bankruptcies in WNC related to unaffordable health care costs.
Rates will now be regulated so Insurance Companies can no longer raise rates arbitrarily, place lifetime caps on medical expenses, or drop people when they get sick, as they do now.
People, who are happy with the insurance they have through their employer, can keep it. If they lose their job or change jobs, they can get new insurance. This will enable entrepreneurial activity since people will not feel job locked.
